Announcing our 2023/24 Season!

PRESS RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE The City Choir of Washington’s 2023-2024 Season

Washington, DC (Wednesday, July 12, 2023). Join the City Choir of Washington this 2023/24 season on a journey from the profane to the sacred, and explore the connections—through love, passion, spirituality, and music—that make us human. From J.S. Bach to W.A. Mozart, from Roderick Williams to Ralph Vaughan Williams, our concert season will help you feel more deeply and heal more completely.

In harmony with our newly defined mission, vision, and values, this season sees City Choir expanding our geographic footprint throughout the Washington metro region, with performance venues in Northwest, Southeast, and downtown DC, Maryland, and Virginia.

On August 30, City Choir partners with the Richmond Ballet, Richmond Symphony, and Richmond Symphony Chorus—conducted by Erin Freeman—for a Carmina Burana spectacular! Excite all your senses at Wolf Trap’s Filene Center where you will experience all the drama, mystery, and humor of Orff’s masterpiece—immersed in classic choreography, surrounded by the chorus, and all accompanied by a thunderous full orchestra. Please note that tickets are available at Wolf Trap and are not part of City Choir’s regular four-concert subscription. You can receive a 20% discount with the code: “City Choir”. Carmina Burana: August 30, 2023 | 8 PM | Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts, Vienna, VA

Begin your holiday celebrations early, with “Magnificent Bach” on November 19, 2023. Amid the historic environs and glorious acoustics of the Church of Epiphany, Artistic Director Erin Freeman will lead chorus, soloists, and orchestra in J.S. Bach’s original Magnificat in E-flat, complete with the rarely performed four Christmas interpolations. The concert will open with a cappella works by Anton Bruckner, Elaine Hagenberg, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Jan Sandström, and Eva Toler. “Magnificent Bach”: November 19, 2023 | 5 PM | Church of the Epiphany, Washington, DC

Celebrate Mozart’s 268th birthday with the City Choir of Washington! Be swept away by the beauty and solemnity of W.A. Mozart’s Great Mass in C Minor on January 28, 2024 (the day after Mozart’s birthday) in the stark grandeur and quiet beauty of National Presbyterian Church. “For Mozart’s Birthday”: January 28, 2024 | 5 PM | National Presbyterian Church, Washington, DC

It’s date night with City Choir! Join us for “Songs of Love, Loss & Connection” at THEARC in Washington, DC on March 16, and Montgomery College Cultural Arts Center in Silver Spring, Maryland on March 17. This romantic program, with string quintet and piano, will feature music by Roderick Williams, Johannes Brahms, Eric Whitacre, and Jake Runestad, topped off with Irish songs of love and loss. “Songs of Love, Loss & Connection”: March 16, 2024 | 5 PM | THEARC, Washington, DC; March 17, 2024 | 5 PM | MCCAC, Silver Spring, MD

On our final concert of the season, the City Choir of Washington celebrates our favorite art with “An Homage to Music.” Join us at Schlesinger Hall on June 2, 2024—Edward Elgar’s birthday—for an evening of music about music, featuring Elgar’s rarely performed and colorful The Music Makers, the lush Serenade to Music by Ralph Vaughan Williams, and additional music by Reena Esmail, and Robert A. Harris. “An Homage to Music”: June 2, 2024 | 5 PM | Rachel M. Schlesinger Hall, Alexandria, VA

In addition to Carmina Burana and the four flagship concerts, the City Choir of Washington’s engagement ensemble, the City Singers, under the direction of Assistant Conductor Kathleen Jagielski, will continue to bring programs of holiday music, spirituals, pop tunes, and American classics to audiences at assisted living facilities, military retirement communities, medical facilities, and homeless shelters.

Other community engagement programs in the 2023-2024 season include the continuation of City Choir’s work with the National Symphony Orchestra’s Sound Health Initiative, Artistic Director Erin Freeman’s clinics with DC area music educators, and singing the national anthem at the September 1, 2023 Washington Nationals baseball game.
